Tryout information: For the 2026-27 Season

Fairport FURY Softball 10u Tryouts 2026-2027Please register here to attend our softball tryouts! You are required to attend one tryout. PLEASE come 15 minutes early to check in and be ready to play. 10u TRYOUT DATES & TIMES: Primary Tryout Date: Tuesday 7/28 - 5:30-6:00 : Pitchers and catchers *pitchers that have pitched in games only for tryouts please - 6:00 - 8:00 : All players - FLL Field 7 Thursday 7/30 - May be used as needed for those who can't attend 7/28 - Coach will contact you to set up a time in the evening PLEASE: Have your player wear a shirt or jersey with a number and/or name on it. Thank you! COACHES: I'm very excited to share that our Head Coach Samantha Burkett will be returning, and this year Sarah Dillon will be her assistant. INFORMATION: This is our second year running a 10u team! We are excited to be able to offer this to our community. In the Fall, the teams will meet and likely have a some outdoor practices, scrimmages and/or games. It is encouraged that players participate in FLL's fall ball, if they are interested and available. For the winter, we will be reserving indoor space so each team can practice once a week (usually November through mid April). Additional pitching and catching practices will also be scheduled when space is available. When coaches feel the team is ready, they could do an indoor scrimmage with another team in the winter. Our goal is to get indoor practice space on Sundays, if it is available. In the spring, we do require all 10u and most 12u players to also play Fairport Little League spring ball, just like other neighboring towns. This requirement applies to 6th grade players and younger, as 7th graders may play school ball. They usually do have practices on a day that doesn't conflict with the FLL season for players and pitchers/catchers, and may have tournaments during the FLL season, but they won't conflict with FLL games. In the late spring, early summer (mid June), we plan to have the teams participate in a local summer league again, such as the Victor Vipers league. This is a 5 or 6 week league that plays double headers once a week from mid June through mid/end of July. (Yes, it overlaps with playoff week for FLL, but all the LL towns agree to work out the schedules to avoid conflicts.) Last year the team played in 2 local tournaments, in May and June. For the 2027 season, the team will likely play in 2 or 3 tournaments (which may include July) depending on what the coaches and team decides. The 2027 tournament dates should come out in November/December/January, so that is when those decisions will be made. COMMITMENT will be important! If our goal is to have approximately a team of 12, we will need a commitment from the players and families to ensure we have enough players for tournament weekends and summer league nights. In addition, the commitment to practices, especially in the winter, will be important- that is when the teams will focus on skill development! For players that are offered a position and accept a position on the team, their families will be provided a commitment letter for them to sign, showing commitment to their team for the season. COMPETITION: Just a note about the level of competition. The level of play at the 10u travel ball level is quite a bit higher than what we play in our Minors Little League division in the spring. The pitching is faster and more accurate (there are walks- there is no coach pitch), and the hitting, fielding and throwing is overall more competitive than our house little league Minors division. Pitchers do throw from 35 feet still, with the same smaller 11" ball. The rest of the rules are pretty close to standard softball rules, they are not simplified like our Minors LL rules are. We find that our girls love the challenge and excitement of playing at this level, and is why we practice and work on skill development over the winter. Her teams won two sectional titles and Sam was named section V Player of the Year and All-State her senior season. She also played many years for the Monroe Blazers softball organization. A two-sport athlete (volleyball), Sam was named athlete of the year at FHS. Sam was a four year starter for the University of Rochester as a pitcher and infielder, Sam was named captain as well as an academic All-American and All-Conference player and her team was the first for Rochester to be nationally ranked and earn a bid to NCAAs. She was also a four-year varsity volleyball player. Sam has been an assistant coach for Cooperstown Varsity softball as well as Fairport Varsity softball for many years. She has coached in Fairport Little League for the past 6 years. Sam works for the University of Rochester in HR communications. She has 2 daughters playing Fairport Little League.
